Tucked into the forests of the Piatra Mare Mountains, just a short drive from Brașov, the Seven Ladders Canyon (Canionul Șapte Scări) offers one of Romania's most exhilarating short hikes. The trail follows a narrow limestone gorge, where a series of steel ladders and walkways let you climb directly up the rushing stream, past waterfalls and moss-covered rock walls. It’s a half-day adventure that combines nature, a touch of adrenaline, and easy access from the city.
The trail and its ladders
The canyon is named for the seven steel ladders that once formed the only route through the gorge. Today, the trail has been improved with additional metal steps, cables and anchored walkways, but the spirit remains the same: you climb through the water-carved chasm, often directly above the stream. The total ascent is around 200 metres, and the technical section is short—about 600 metres—but it’s steep and requires care. A harness and via ferrata kit are not needed, but gloves are recommended for gripping the cables.
After the ladders, the trail emerges onto a forested plateau. From here, you can loop back down a wider path or continue to other attractions in the Piatra Mare massif, such as the Piatra Mare Chalet or the Tamina Waterfall. Most visitors treat the canyon as a standalone outing, taking two to three hours for the round trip.
Practical tips
Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip—the metal rungs can be slippery when wet. Bring at least a litre of water and a light snack. A small backpack is ideal, as you’ll need both hands free for the ladders. Avoid the trail during or just after heavy rain, when water levels rise quickly and the ladders become treacherous. The gorge is shaded and cool, so a light jacket is useful even in summer.
An entry ticket is required; tickets are sold at the entrance near the car park. The trail is managed by the local forestry authority and is generally well maintained, but conditions can vary. Check locally before setting out.
Getting there
The canyon lies about 15 kilometres south of Brașov, in the village of Timișu de Jos. By car, follow the DN1A towards Predeal and turn off at the sign for Timișu de Jos. A narrow, partly unpaved road leads to a small car park near the trailhead. Parking is limited on busy summer weekends.
By public transport, take a bus from Brașov’s Autogara 2 towards Timișu de Jos or Predeal and ask for the stop near the canyon. From the main road, it’s a 30–40 minute walk to the start of the hike. Taxis from Brașov are also an option for a fixed fare.
When to visit
The best months are May to October, when the weather is stable and the ladders are dry. Spring brings stronger water flow and greener vegetation, while autumn offers crisp air and golden leaves. In winter, the trail is often closed or dangerous due to ice. Always check the weather forecast and avoid thunderstorms—the metal ladders make the gorge a poor place to be in lightning.
Seven Ladders Canyon is a compact adventure that rewards you with a true sense of exploration. It’s an ideal add-on to a Brașov itinerary for active travellers looking for something beyond the city’s main square.
