US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied reports that he plans to leave the Trump administration, stating that it has always been his intention to serve until the end of the president's term. Speaking to the New York Times, Rubio said, "It has always been my plan to work for President Trump until the end of his term."
The comments follow a Bloomberg report on Thursday suggesting Rubio was weighing resignation after Republicans lost the midterm elections on 3 November. According to that report, Rubio had discussed a possible departure with White House officials and was encouraged to stay. When asked about the reports, Rubio told the New York Times, "Honestly, I don't know where these things come from."
The State Department also pushed back on the claims. Dylan Johnson, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Global Public Affairs, called the Bloomberg article "completely invented". Johnson likewise dismissed reports from The Independent that Rubio was preparing a 2028 presidential bid, describing them as "fake news, completely unfounded".
Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser to President Trump, is seen as a possible Republican candidate for the 2028 presidential election, alongside Vice President JD Vance. However, Rubio declined to discuss his political future. "I just won't talk about 2028 at all anymore," he said. He has previously said he would support JD Vance if the vice president decided to run for president.
