On Friday, Romania’s Education Minister Sorin Costreie hosted a first-of-its-kind meeting with 12 former education and research ministers to explore how to maintain continuity in reform efforts beyond individual terms in office.
The minister announced the gathering on his Facebook page, describing it as “a first at the ministry” and stressing that education is a long-term construction that should not be rebuilt with every mandate. “A real collaboration between former and current ministers can help continue reforms despite changes at the top,” Costreie said, adding that many solutions that could improve education do not need to be reinvented.
Among those attending were Ecaterina Andronescu, Monica Anisie, Ligia Deca, Anton Anton, Cristian Adomniței, Alexandru Athanasiu, Daniel Breaz, Mihnea Costoiu, Adrian Curaj, Mihai Dimian, Pavel Năstase, and Remus Pricopie. The minister noted that some former officials were unable to attend, and he plans to hold a separate meeting with them.
Costreie also revealed that after consulting with those who could not join this first session, he intends to establish a consultative council dedicated to essential topics in education and research. “We build on what works and improve what doesn’t, and expertise should come before political affiliations,” he explained.
