Romania’s Orthodox Christians will mark several major feasts in November 2026, including three celebrations marked with a red cross in the church calendar. The month also brings the start of the 40-day Christmas fast, which begins on Sunday, 15 November.

According to the Orthodox calendar, these are the key red-cross feasts:

  • 8 November – Synaxis of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel: The church honours the archangels and all heavenly powers. Michael is venerated as leader of the angels and defender against evil, while Gabriel is known for announcing the births of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ.
  • 21 November – Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple (Vovidenia): This feast recalls the presentation of the Virgin Mary at the Temple in Jerusalem at the age of three by her parents, Joachim and Anna, who fulfilled a vow to dedicate her to God.
  • 30 November – Saint Andrew, the Protector of Romania: The apostle Andrew, brother of Peter and the first-called disciple, is linked by tradition to preaching in the Dobrogea region. The Holy Synod proclaimed him Protector of Romania in 1997, and the day became a national church holiday in 2001. It is also a legal public holiday under the Labour Code.

Other significant commemorations include Saint John Chrysostom on 13 November, known for his sermons and care for the poor, and Saint Arsenie from Prislop (Arsenie Boca) on 28 November. Arsenie Boca was canonised in 2024, and his tomb at Prislop Monastery in Hunedoara County draws pilgrims from across the country.

The Christmas fast begins on Sunday, 15 November and runs through 24 December inclusive. The last day when believers may eat meat, eggs and dairy is Saturday, 14 November. During the fast, the faithful are encouraged to combine prayer, temperance and acts of charity as preparation for the Nativity.
